‘MOONYOLK’ is About Finally Confessing Your Love
MOONYOLK takes us to a private moment between two boys floating on the sea, asking us to watch them share their feelings for one another.
You spend some time with one character as he anxiously floats on the water, trying his best to fight his hunger so that he doesn’t have to go back to the boy he loves. He’s too scared to say something stupid (like telling him how he ACTUALLY feels about him) out of worry that it will make things strange between them. It’s a fear I have no doubt that many of you know all too well, keeping your emotions bottled up to keep from ‘ruining’ things. All you can think about is how bad things would get if your confession went over badly.
But then the boy he loves shows up. He’s made you some fried rice, which you’ve been craving. You can’t help but wonder why he’s come to join you on the waters. Well, YOU likely know why he’s here. You, as the player, know that boy likes you, but you know how hard it is to tell when you want someone to like you so much. The two grow closer over a brief conversation, but as you lie on the water together, the world collapses. An apocalyptic end is coming, and a new world is being born. But you have enough time to say how you feel and share in that new world. You share your memories, and can at least transition into whatever comes next with some happiness.
MOONYOLK is brief, but immensely touching all the same. It’s a reminder that sometimes we need to say what we feel, as we’ll all run out of time to say it eventually. Maybe not apocalyptically, but we all have finite time to express what’s in our hearts.
