Pokémon Scarlet & Violet starters

It’s official, the ninth generation of Pokémon is on its way, as Game Freak announced Pokémon Scarlet & Violet during February’s Pokemon Presents. Due to the recent release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus, as well as the Diamond and Pearl remakes, many trainers weren’t expecting a new Pokémon experience quite so soon, but Game Freak is obviously trying to keep up their recent momentum, and no one is complaining.

While we know very little about the new games, we did see the reveal of all three Pokémon Scarlet and Violet starters, as well as some screenshots of the new Mediterranean inspired region. It’s a rarity to get concrete information so far in advance of a release, so naturally, the internet went into meltdown when the three adorable new starters graced our screen towards the end of the reveal trailer. This new trio is not to be quacked, miaowed, or snapped at, that’s for sure.

We also learned that the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet release date is sometime around the end of 2022, just two years from the release of the last mainline games, Pokémon Sword and Shield. We can already see that these games boast a graphical improvement from the generation eight titles, so it’s exciting to think what other expansions to the world of Pokémon we might see.

With that out the way, let’s take a first look at the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet starters.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet starters Sprigatito

Sprigatito, the grass-type cat Pokémon, is our new favourite forest-dwelling feline. Described officially as “the capricious, attention-seeking grass cat Pokémon”, we can’t imagine that Sprigatito will have to work too hard for attention, as many trainers have already identified the kitten as their favourite grass-type starter in generations. All we’re hoping is that this grass cat can avoid the humanoid evolution line, and stays on all fours through each stage of transformation.

Custom art of Fuecoco

We’ve had water and ground-type croc Pokémon before, but we have a first for the fire-type in Fuecoco. It’s noticeable that Fuecoco looks much timider than other crocs from previous generations, and seems to be the most docile of the new starter trio. Fire-type starters often look much more intimidating by their final form, so it’ll be interesting to see if Fuecoco continues this tradition and evolves into a furious fire-breathing croc-monster. Personally, we hope he stays cute.

The water-type starter on the bill is Quaxly, the duckling Pokémon. Quaxly is the only new Pokémon to come with his own hat, so it’s already the most stylish of the bunch, but we’re more excited at the prospect of a water/flying-type final evolution for this starter Pokémon. There have been starter evolution lines with fire/flying and grass/flying types, but we’re yet to see the aquatic birds get some love, so we’re hoping to see Pokémon Scarlet & Violet rectify that.

So far, that’s all we know about Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, the new Pokémon Scarlet and Violet starter Pokémon. We’ll be sure to update this page with all the latest information regarding the upcoming titles, and the Pokémon included as we get them, so keep us bookmarked.
