‘RPG Time’ Brings Homemade Adventures to a School Notebook

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright sees a school-aged child’s doodles and video game ideas come to life, taking you on a hand-drawn adventure.

Ever scribble ideas for video games in your school notebook? Put together some levels in the margins of some boring math work? If you’re coming to this site, I’d be surprised if you hadn’t at some point. My own books were full of flaming pits, spiked traps, and some poorly-drawn warrior who had to leap their way through them. In this game, though, those works are a bit livelier than they were in any of my work books. After school is done for the day, Kenta’s notebook springs to life. And the kid has tons of great ideas for a variety of games from different genres, all cobbled together from a child’s creativity.

You’re in a world created by the imagination of a child that loves video games, so there’s no telling what to expect as you work through the game. Much of the game has been drawn out in pencil (including a hand-drawn fighting game that’s looking pretty sharp), but it doesn’t end with just drawings. Cardboard, construction paper, and all manner of other crafty tools will also bring you bullet hell action, puzzle-solving adventure, and explorative action. While you’ll doubtlessly enjoy the continuous genre changes, it’s the craft-based presentation that’s always a treat to look at. I love the creativity that’s gone into creating the ‘console’ and ‘controller’ you play with, feeling reminded of many of my own video game-obsessed childhood crafts.

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright has a stunning, playful presentation that is just as fun to take in as the various genre excursions the game contains. It constantly surprises and delights.

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is available now on the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store. It will be available on Steam on September 13, 2022.
