SNES/Super Famicom: a visual compendium – now available | GamesYouLoved
Since the Kickstarter distribution at the beginning of 2018, the SNES/Super Famicom: a visual compendium has been available to the backers – now in February 2018 it’s available for all!
Here’s why we think it should be celebrated.
The SNES and the Super Famicom – they formed part of the 1990s gaming world with a head to head with SEGA and the Mega Drive.
Sure there were other systems around at the time – the 3DO, CDi, Jaguar etc – but the SNES outshone all of them, and even the CD technology of the Sega Saturn couldn’t contend.
Had SEGA made certain different product marketing and prices choices with the Mega Drive who knows what could have happened – and then there was it’s famous bout with the Saturn and Sony PlayStation – but now we are getting into a whole different story! So let’s keep foucused on the job in hand…
This is about the SNES and Super Famicom and that amazing time in the early 1990s with changes in the way games were made and even 3D in gaming started to come about.
Star Fox or Star Wing amazed us and there was more. Pilot Wings, one of the first games on the SNES wowed us with it’s speed and gameplay. Things were looking good.
The SNES/Super Famicom: a visual compendium is a extensively researched and beautifully designed book that takes you through the journey with the games, hardware, accessories, and the people who made this concept become reality.
Following the success of the NES / Famicom: a visual compendium, Bitmap Books retains the high end coffee table book approach in print finishing, paper and overall quality. Using a wide range of enhancement, standards and attention to detail. From the ribbon book mark in the SNES colours, to the hardback slip case with lenticular pixel art chracters from A-Z on the front this book has alot to desire.
Coupled with a large number of double page spreads – the art and photography of the SNES and Super Famicom really sings here. For us 16-Bit pixel art is very interesting from a game art perspective. It starts to add much more detail than the previous generation, yet retains it’s time and place in the past which makes the whole thing very nostalgic. When you think about it, some of the games here are well over 25 years old.
