‘Doko Roko’ Swings Massive Swords in Speedy Combat
Doko Roko asks what a reasonable size for a sword should be and then tosses that information away. If you want to fight with a blade the size of a shed, you’re in the right place.
Being reborn can be kinda crummy. At least, when you have to climb a massive tower filled with monsters that keep killing you, it is. For the character, at least. For the player, it’s a lot of fun if you like swinging a big, BIG sword around. Our protagonist, the Unslain, needs to make its way to the top of a strange, decaying tower full of demons. It’s the kind of situation where being a little fella seems like it would be detrimental, but a small person makes for a small target. Mix that with a big sword and you’re a deadly, but tiny, killer. Not that you won’t need to stay light on your feet to survive.
While swinging a huge sword around is exhilarating, having to use the same old blade for the entire game would get old. The game offers an array of different swords that can tweak your abilities in useful ways, making changes to how you move and swipe at enemies. No matter what, your strikes will be fast, though, making for high-speed combat that feels endlessly tense. Especially when you throw in a parrying ability that rewards you for taking risks to knock your foes back. Given that this is a roguelike, a missed parry can come with some massive repercussions. But at least it’s a beautiful tower to ascend, so you’ll get another chance to savor a living, vertical world.
Doko Roko is a wild, fast action game where mistakes come with high costs, creating a journey that sings with tension. With the right tools, you might get to see some of the strange denizens of this tower before the demons kill you. But you’re a small target, so hopefully that helps keep you alive.
Doko Roko will be made available today on Steam.
