EGX 2017 -The UK’s Biggest Games Event Tour | GamesYouLoved

We spent a whole day at EGX 2017 and focused mainly on what it had in store for Retro Gamers like us.

Overall it was a great day out and nothing was an issue – a well run show and lots to see. We did a whole video tour and vlog of the event. Here is the video for your viewing pleasure:

Summary of the day:

Starting off really early (4am wake up and leaving London at 6:30am) we got to the NEC in Birmingham just after 8:30am. After some refreshments we entered the halls just before 9:30am.

The place was empty (this was before the press entered at 10am) and the perfect opportunity to tour the event. We wanted our focus to be retro – and it did well to deliver. From the massive retro space put on by Replay Events it couldn’t have had a better start to the day. There was pretty much everything a retro gamer would want – from pinballs, to deluxe cabinets and consoles and computers galore. It was well spaced out and sign posted too. This is essential when the event gets alot busier over the Saturday and Sunday. We tried our hand at games we owned too (Street Fighter section was awesome) as it’s great to soak up the atmosphere playing with friends at the event itself. Plus we got the opportunity to play games we hadn’t tried before. The pinball area I played Tron for ages – such a great game.

Beyond the retro area there was retro inspired current gen games – one of which included Sonic Mania. We had a good go around this and also picked up a poster!

The Retro Indie Zone this year was huge – game upon game was on offer to play and the developers were there to talk us through their inspiration behind the games themselves. You don’t get this opportunity often to talk shop and it was great for us. We got a great interview with one of the developers who has a fantastic retro inspired game. It’s going to be great – coming up on our YouTube channel in the next week or so.

There was plenty of cool merch too – Numskull had one of the largest stands selling a whole range of gear from T shirts to Mugs – some very cool Crash Bandicoot candles too we saw.

We had a good chat with some of the Gadget Show Team – Ortis in particular who was filming a Special Gadget Show edition at the event. Great to see mainstream TV covering gaming and we’ll look out for that show too. We also filmed Craig Charles playing Outrun for some time – watch out for that seperate video on our YouTube channel.
