Sonic Team head again shows interest in Sonic Adventure 3, but recognizes it would take a ton of work

Sonic Frontiers is coming to the Switch on November 8th, 2022, and SEGA has repeatedly said that they envision this title as Sonic’s first step for the next decade of games. Of course, fans will be the ones who ultimately decide if Frontiers is the direction they want future Sonic games to head in.

While Sonic Frontiers is a stepping stone, that doesn’t mean SEGA’s devs don’t have other Sonic projects they’d like to tackle. DoteSports spoke with Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka to find out what kind of Sonic game he would make if he had completely free reign over every decision, and his response is one that will no doubt make longtime Sonic fans happy.

“Instead of a feature, I would like to use these golden keys to kind of make the next Sonic Adventure game. I was there for [Sonic Adventure] and was there for [Sonic Adventure 2,] those are my games. I really want to continue creating the Adventure series.

When you look at all the games that are out there now and knowing the kind of expectations for the next Sonic Adventure game would be, it would take a whole of investment from the company, a lot of development time, and a lot of game volume to really bring something to market, but that is what I would use the golden keys for.”

Just as Iizuka says, there are a lot of moving parts that would need to come together to make Sonic Adventure 3 a possibility, and even then it would be a herculean task. That’s not to say it couldn’t happen one day, but it seems very much a pipe dream at this point in time.
