Retronauts Episode 483: The Warriors
Can you count, suckas?
We love video games here at Retronauts, but we also recognize that movies play a large role in the history of our favorite medium, so much so that we’ve had plenty of episodes already about famous films solely because of the impact that they had on popular culture. But The Warriors is different. Not only was the 1979 Walter Hill film a surprise hit, not only did it subtly influence generations of video games, but 26 years after it debuted in theaters, Rockstar officially adopted the property into a video game.
So yeah, at the request of Patreon supporter Allen Berry, we’re talking about The Warriors this week, led by our resident New York expert Diamond Feit. Joining xem are three experienced podcasters with much expertise on this particular topic: James Eldred, host of Cinema Oblivia, Diana Goodman, co-host of Thirty Twenty Ten, and Mikel Reparaz, co-host of Vidjagame Apocalypse.
A couple quick notes:
- In discussing this adult film and the language its characters use on screen, this episode has a bit more profanity than our usual recordings.
- This blog detailing the filming locations of The Warriors will help add context to all our talk of where the boys are running to/from during the film.
- The episode of James’ podcast which we discuss at the end of this recording has since been posted! Listen to Diamond and James talk about 1978’s Foul Play on Cinema Oblivia.
Description: Boppers of the world, unite! Diamond Feit, James Eldred, Diana Goodman, and Mikel Reparaz gang up to talk about The Warriors, both the landmark 1979 Walter Hill and the video game(s) based upon it.
