Move over Ratchet (the main protagonist of the Ratchet & Clank series) and Skylar (the main protagonist of Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island) ‘cause there is a new fleet of space-faring felines in the form of the Cougar Squadron from the Meowfyre Space Force!

Go boldly where no feline have gone before! It’s a one small step for a space alien kitty and a giant leap for feline kind! SpaceCats In Space! promises to deliver its Kickstarter backers and gaming audience a stellar astral adventure that’s literally out of this world! To top it all off, Robotic Potato is bringing the old rivalry between cats and dogs to outer space.
Figure 2: Robotic Potato is the developing team behind SpaceCats In Space!
Speaking of Robotic Potato, it’s a video game developing team based in Queens in New York City and it’s founded by its CEO, Alexander Lau, on Wednesday 18th June 2014 which consists of himself, Rachel Lewis (art director) and Katie Austin (producer), to name a few. The company is known for their previous mobile phone games such as Mother Goose and Mother Goose Demolition Company and the obscure platformer, Kami Kami. Fast-forward to 2016, and they’re currently developing their latest game called SpaceCats In Space!
First Samus Aran from the Metroid series, then Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series and now, Princess Angelina Contessa III from the upcoming indie, 90’s-inspired, sci-fi shooter, SpaceCats In Space! There aren’t many princesses who don’t rely on their heroes (whether they are princes, knights or plumbers) to save them nor there aren’t very much feisty, female protagonists taking charge, fighting their own battles or taking matters into their own hands these days so it’s spectacular to finally see a game starring a princess who isn’t following the status quo. Girls do indeed rule the gaming world or rather the gaming universe! Girl power at its finest! Regarding SpaceCats In Space!, it’s in the vein of Saturday morning cartoons from the 90’s (hence the reason why the lyrics of the theme song sound cheesy) and the Star Fox series, most specifically Starwing and Lylat Wars in terms of the 90’s.
Figure 3: The Cougar Squadron led by Princess Angelina Contessa III.
Just like the Ratchet & Clank series and the Star Fox series, SpaceCats In Space! is a sci-fi shooter that takes place in a universe inhabited by humanoid, anthropomorphic, alien animals.

No video game is complete without a storyline and this game is no exception. The canine Grolich Empire laid waste to the Kingdom of Meowfyre but its Royal Majesty, Crown Princess Angelina Contessa III, isn’t having any of it and thought enough is enough. In order to ward off the invasion, she suits up for an impending, tumultuous tussle and she takes it upon herself to strive to protect her kingdom at all costs, even if it means blasting her opposition to kingdom come with her highly trained feline army while leaving nothing but a trail of obliterated enemy spaceships, stardust and fiery explosions in their wake. To sum the plot all up, it basically screams British space alien cats versus German (Nazis, to be precise) space alien dogs engaging in a full-scale, World War II-style, intergalactic warfare set in the cosmos. SpaceCats In Space! is an 2D, 90’s-influenced, animated, twin-stick, top-down, sci-fi shooter which is created in Unity and it’s jam-packed with twelve challenging levels, twenty-five brand-new enemies, larger-than-life, screen-filling bosses, spacebears, RPG elements (levelling up and other forms of progression), upgradeable weaponry, spaceship shield and spacecraft, 2D animated cutscenes, a custom soundtrack, screen-shaking feedback and top-notch voice acting. In addition, the aforementioned game boasts of solo mode or local two-player co-op mode, visual narrative story mode which splits into a plethora of different options to choose from (the decisions the player will make will determine the outcome of the scuffles and affect the battlefield, foes and Angelina’s spaceship), fast-paced, twin-stick with lifelike and accurate space physics (in terms of gravity for example), tank-style controls (similar to the kind of controls players experienced in video games from the 90’s), elite weapon recoil and the opportunity to call in reinforcements such as a bomber in order to wipe out everything in sight (whether they are adversaries or obstacles) or a trusty, AI-controlled wingman or teammate.
Figure 5: The higher the level, the more stronger the artillery are.
With its cheesy theme song, a little bit of profanity, an insanely immense amount of in-game feline and canine puns and jokes than you can shake a stick at and crude dialogue, gamers will have a blast (pun intended) with this interstellar game whilst laughing out loud due to the shamelessly hilarious script while they’re at it.
SpaceCats In Space! blasts on to Windows and Mac via Steam, OSX, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in mid 2017. In the meantime, its alpha demo has landed on Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight on Monday 8th August 2016 (just in time for International Cat Day, according to Twitter and Facebook) so the gamers have a sense of what the game is like firsthand.
According to the SpaceCats In Space! Greenlight, Kickstarter, video game and Unite 2015 trailers on YouTube, the Kickstarter campaign launched on Monday 8th August 2016 and it will end on Friday 16th September 2016.
If you’re a fan of twin-shooter games, you have an affinity for Saturday morning 90’s cartoons, you’re a cat lover/person, you hate dogs with a burning passion, you’ve always wanted kick mutt butt or you want to take out your life-long hatred of dogs on the antagonistic Grolich Empire, this shoot ‘em up game might be for you.
Ratchet (from the Ratchet & Clank series) might want to invest in a Thunderstorm Umbrella/ProtoLightning Rod V.4 (a space-age, futuristic, umbrella-shaped weapon from the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 video game, Secret Agent Clank) ‘cause SpaceCats In Space! is going to bring in the meteor storm!
