‘Zodiac DX’ – A Platformer About Magical Girls Saving the World

Zodiac DX lets you choose one of three magical girls to use to face celestial foes and protect the world. Just try not to get too distracted playing cards to do your job.

Miah, Dani, and Cyra are mostly average schoolgirls. Except for the whole superpower thing. So they kind of have to overcome evil cosmic forces while keeping up with math homework. Luckily, the homework isn’t your problem. You just need to pick which of the three girls to play as, then start mangling bosses and monsters. Miah likes to fight at range, Dani tosses around the cute charms she collects, and Cyra can cause big-time damage with her martial arts abilities. Choose whichever one you like and then you can start fighting through this NES-era-inspired platformer.

The game reminds me of a lot of the fun outlier NES games I’ve played over the years. It’s full of strange monsters that look really nice, has a solid soundtrack, and can be beaten quickly if you know what you’re doing. This one, thankfully, isn’t as hard as a lot of those older titles. Still, you’ll get a lot out of it since each character plays differently, and there’s optional harder modes and boss rushes to keep you coming back. Also, there’s an in-game card game that play a lot like Final Fantasy VIII‘s Triple Triad. You have attack values on all sides, and you want to overcome the cards around you. It’s not quite the same, but it’s definitely very hard to put down.

Zodiac DX is a fun platformer filled with great creature designs and fun characters, and has lots of little extras to keep you coming back to it.

Zodiac DX is available now on Steam.
