Master Detective Archives: Rain Code’s creator aims to ‘revive a dead genre’ with this title
Master Detective Archives: Rain Code is a Switch-exclusive adventure game coming from Kazutaka Kodaka, the mind behind the Danganronpa series. While that franchise has been a huge success, Kodaka isn’t willing to rest on his laurels. Instead, he wanted to create something new that made a big splash.
In an interview with Denfaminicogamer, Kodaka talked about the inception of Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. It turns out this title came to be due to Kodaka’s interest in reviving what he considers to be a dead genre.
To begin with, I personally think that the Japanese adventure game genre is pretty much dead. Unlike other game genres, they rarely sell well or trend [in the country]. Therefore, from the very beginning with Danganronpa, I wanted to go beyond the usual boundaries of adventure games.
There is still potential for “mystery-type games.” I believe that anyone can enjoy the mystery and suspense of “solving a murder mystery with deductions” and “guessing the culprit,” so I felt the possibility of “reviving a dead genre” was a way to bring this to users.
