IndieCade 2022 – FICTiVETRUiSM’s Top Picks
IndieCade 2022 this year was a week-long Steam event highlighting this year’s submissions and winners. I’ve sifted through all the games and compiled a list of my favorites.
Read Only Memories: NEURODIVER
by MidBoss, LLC
Here’s a dialogue-driven, point-and-click mystery adventure game from the makers of 2064: Read Only Memories. In this one, you play as a psychic detective chasing a “rogue esper who’s hidden themselves in the memories of others.” The premise alone sounds awesome. I enjoyed my time with 2064: Read Only Memories, which was fun, charming, and really engaging. Really looking forward to this one.

9 Years of Shadows
by Halberd Studios
9 Years of Shadows is already looking like a fun and well-polished Metroidvania. I really like the art style in this one; it reminds me of stained glass windows. Combat is looking fun, too, alongside some cool armor types which allow for abilities like being able to swim in water like a mermaid. Can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

Farewell North
by Kyle Banks
Here’s a game I got to play a demo of. In this one, I played as a dog helping his owner traverse the land. It’s inspired by games like Journey but with more darkly symbolic manifestations similar to Sea of Solitude. Overall, this demo was more relaxing, so the darker elements aren’t too intense. The game is also looking to deliver an emotional story about saying farewell. I’m looking forward to playing more of it.

Rose and Locket
by Whistling Wizard
Here is a game right up my alley! The visuals are reminiscent of Guacamelee! but with a Wild West theme. I like the way the minimalistic color palate gives the game a more fantastical, otherworldly vibe. It’s shaping up to be a cool-looking action platformer. And as someone who’s a sucker for Wild West-inspired games, I’m curious to see how this comes along.

ANNO: Mutationem
by ThinkingStars
This 2D cyberpunk action RPG oozes style. The combat feels as satisfying as it looks, and the world is very atmospheric. It’s currently out right now and sitting on a lot of positive reviews. If you’re looking for an anime-inspired cyberpunk world to lose yourself in, this might just be it.
