WALKTHROUGHS

Post-Apocalyptic Tour of NYC in a Multiplayer Shooter Game

The digital war zone of “Tom Clancy’s The Division,” a dystopian multiplayer shooter game, is reappropriated for a pacifist city tour of dystopian Manhattan. Our absurdly humorous tour guide comments freely on the city’s urban design and architectural past while trying to avoid being killed by stray bullets.

“New York is under martial law, which can be dangerous for us casual urban explorers,” warns our tour guide, dressed in full combat gear. His tour group, each carrying an AK-47, moves awkwardly in their avatars. The guide explains how to maneuver with keyboard controls. “We’re in a narrative multiplayer shooter game,” the guide explains. “But today, we will walk through the battlefield with a peaceful intention and just focus on the city itself.”

“Operation Jane Walk” was directed by Leonhard Müllner and Robin Klengel. It is part of The Atlantic Selects, an online showcase of short documentaries by independent creators, curated by The Atlantic.
