YUMENIKKI dev shares insight into the game’s creation
The original YUMENIKKI saw release all the way back in 2004, and was praised for its unique gameplay, surreal approach, and attention to detail. That release eventually lead to YUMENIKKI -DREAM DIARY- on Switch, a reimagining made with the permission, cooperation, and supervision of the original creator.
In the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, none other than Undertale’s Toby Fox had the chance to interview Kikiyama, the developer behind YUMENIKKI. Kikiyama is known for being extremely quiet, as they have no social media presence, nor do they do interviews. Somehow, some way, Fox managed to make it happen!
In the interview, Kikiyama only answers questions with yes/no, which definitely falls in line with their mysterious persona. That said, yes/no are enough to offer some insight into YUMENIKKI’s creation. Here’s the handful of details that were gleaned from the interview.
- Aphex Twin’s atmospheric music did not inspire the soundscapes of YUMENIKKI
- Kikiyama would sketch creature designs and scenes on paper before implementing
- Kikiyama hadn’t worked with RPG Maker prior to developing YUMENIKKI
