Atelier Ryza’s devs always intended to make a trilogy, but fan support made it possible

The third and final installment in the Atelier Ryza series, Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key, is now available on Switch. This closes a chapter in what has become the most popular Atelier series in the franchise’s history, especially when it pertains to audiences outside of Japan.

In an interview with Nintendo Everything, Gust’s Junzo Hosoi spoke about closing out the Ryza trilogy, and reveals that there was always a plan to create three titles. Of course, those 3 games could only be realized with the support fans offered the first and second installments.

When we began drafting the idea for the Secret series, I wanted to create not only a story what followed the growth of a single protagonist, but to make it a trilogy if possible. So in the end, it was at we had intended from the start. However, whether it actually became a two-part series or would continue as a trilogy was something we thought to decide upon only after seeing the players’ reactions to the game, so it really is thanks to the fans support that we were able to show Ryza’s final story.

Without strong sales of Atelier Ryza 1 and 2, we may have never gotten the third installment to close out the series. It’s great to know that fans showed up big for both titles, letting Gust tell the story they intended from the start.
