‘Big Boy Boxing’ Punches Out Some Oddball Fighters
Big Boy Boxing is a quirky slapstick boss-rush game where you will be fighting against a bunch of former boxing champions, trying your luck at destroying them.
These different champions all have really fun looking characters, actions and bits of conversation that will make you smile. When it’s time to fight them, you are able to dodge, punch, and charge yourself up for big hits, slowly working down the health bar of the person you are up against. You can only take three hits, so avoiding blows and making sure that you are attacking as much as possible is the real goal in these fights.
The fighting feels very smooth and simple to understand, largely because of the interesting way that narration is woven into the gameplay. Big Boy Boxing allows you to understand more about the attacks and the way to take on your challenger through what they say to you, giving you some context and an upper hand on who you are fighting if you pay close enough attention to it.
There are also mini-games, rematches, and minibosses within the game. Over time, you can also unlock abilities that can allow you to heal, (which makes it much easier to handle heavy-hitters) or make everything move in slow motion. These can give you a real edge as your enemies start to get harder. And weirder. Boxing ghosts in the sewers is something that just happens in this game, and there are plenty more odd fighters where that one came from.
There is something very fun and very silly about Big Boy Boxing, even down to the name. It feels like something I haven’t really experienced in a boxing game before, so I am really excited to see the full release!
