The theme of ‘loveable antagonists’ helped build Splatoon 3’s Deep Cut
While Splatoon 1 and 2 each had their lovable idol duos, Splatoon 3 took things in a different direction with the group Deep Cut. This trio certainly some musical chops, but they also happen to have a bit of a mischievous streak as well.
In an interview with Famitsu magazine, Nintendo spoke up on the creation of Splatoon 3’s Deep Cut, where they reveal that one theme was a driving force in the trio’s inception. Nintendo was looking to create characters to represent the game’s Splatfests, which is when they came up with the idea of ‘loveable antagonists.’ Those who’ve played Splatoon 3 definitely recognize how that label fits the bill!
Nintendo didn’t want to create another idol duo this time around, as they didn’t want the new pair to have to compete with the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook. By coming up with a group of characters that have a different role, they could follow a unique design path. The fact that Deep Cut are also troublemakers let Nintendo play with different thematic ideas as well, such as using shark, eel and manta ray motifs.
