Tears of the Kingdom has sold over 18 million copies – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom continues to sell like cocaine-laced cupcakes with Nintendo confirming that the latest entry in the franchise has racked up 18.51 million copies sold. This makes it the ninth best-selling Nintendo Switch game, around 12 million copies behind Breath of the Wild.

It’s all good news for Nintendo right now who posted their quarterly results. According to the company, Tears of the Kingdom helped drive sales of the Switch as well. 3.91 million Switches were sold in the first quarter of the fiscal year, with 82% (2.83 million) of those being the OLED edition. The regular switch sold 0.64 million units, while the Switch Lite sold 0.43 million. That’s a major shift from the first quarter of the last fiscal year which saw the regular Switch sell 1.52 million, the OLED 1.32 million and the Switch Lite 0.59 million.

Nintendo also stated that software sales in the first quarter of this fiscal were the best since the Switch originally launched. They also said that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom accounted for roughly half of those first-party software sales, which means we can also reasonably assume that first-party software sales were around 36 million. Not too shabby.

Looking toward the coming fiscal year, which will end in March of 2024, Nintendo believes it can sell 15 million Switches, meaning they’ll need to shift approximately 4 million units per quarter which could prove difficult since they don’t have another massive title like Tears of the Kingdom coming out. The Switch is already the third best-selling console of all time, sitting around 24 million behind the Nintendo DS, and 25 million behind the PlayStation 2.

However, numerous rumours and reports have come out to suggest that Nintendo is planning to launch its new console toward the end of 2024. Some reports even claim that developers already have the new machine in their hands. Further boosting the credibility of these reports are details on the new console itself, such as it potentially having an LCD screen to reduce costs.

Nintendo also talked about the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, boasting that it bagged a box office haul of $1.349 billion, making it the second-highest-grossing animated movie of all time. They also noted how the movie drove sales of other Mario-related products, with various Mario games seeing a substantial sales boost. Given such massive numbers, it’s hardly surprising that Nintendo affirmed their plans to expand their domination: “Based on the various effects that we have confirmed through the release of this movie, we will continue our efforts towards
visual content-related initiatives.”

To put it all simply, Nintendo is doing very well for itself. The Switch is already established as one of the most successful consoles of all time and its games continue to shift millions of copies.
