Red Dead Redemption port announced for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, no remaster in sight – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews

Following weeks of speculation, Rockstar has announced a new port of Red Dead Redemption for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, launching digitally on August 17 with a physical version dropping on October 13.

While the rumours suggested that Rockstar would be putting out a remastered version of Red Dead Redemption, the truth seems far less exciting. No mention of upgraded graphics or any other improvements was made in the announcement.

Double Eleven Games is handling the new conversion. Founded in 2010, the studio has spent most of that time working as a support unit, with recent titles including Minecraft Dungeons and Rimworld.

“One of the most critically acclaimed games of all time with over 170 Game of the Year Awards, Red Dead Redemption tells the story of former outlaw John Marston as he journeys across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico to track down the last remaining members of the notorious Van der Linde Gang in a bid to save his family. Relive, or experience for the first time, the events immediately following the epic tale of honor and loyalty in the 2018 blockbuster Red Dead Redemption 2 as Marston hunts down his former friends and outlaws Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and his former gang leader, Dutch van der Linde as the era of the cowboy comes to its end.” said Rockstar.

The new package will also include the fantastic Undead Nightmare expansion as well.

Unsurprisingly, fans seem to be disappointed by the announcement. Most people, myself included, were hoping for a remastered version of the classic game alongside a proper PC release. Instead, we’re getting a very basic port to PlayStation 4 and Switch, and zero mention of a PC version. Considering the vast resources of Rockstar, it’s genuinely baffling that so little effort seems to have gone into this project.

Many people have noted the lack of an Xbox version, but that’s easily explained: the original Red Dead Redemption can still be bought and played on Xbox, and even runs at 60fps on Series S/X thanks to the emulation software. The PlayStation 4, however, cannot play the PlayStation 3 version of the game natively, and Red Dead Redemption never came to the Switch, either.

If this new version of the game does indeed contain no improvements, that will mean the original Xbox version will remain the superior way to experience the tale of John Marston.

Red Dead Redemption will be available on PS4 and Switch for $49.99 on August 17.
