Dead Island 2 is coming to another platform next year – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews

Dead Island 2 is apparently scheduled to launch on “another platform” next year, according to Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors.

During Embracer’s quarterly earnings call, Wingefors talked about the game’s performance thus far. Despite being announced way back in 2014 and having a trouble development, the zombie-slaying action-RPG did very well when it launched earlier this year. Across PlayStation, Xbox and PC (via the Epic Store) it managed to sell a million copies in just a few days, and 2 million across a month.

“I think Dead Island had a really strong release window, then we have been seeing more normal performance, according to expectations,” Wingefors said.

“What we now expect obviously is promotions, but primarily the addition of new content coming through, so there is a significant amount of content coming through for the game in the year, that would improve the sales of the base game as well.

“Then looking a year ahead, we would have a release on another platform that will also drive multiple sales.”

It’s that last sentence that has grabbed attention. Wingefors didn’t go into detail about what platform this might be, but I think it’s a safe bet to say that Dead Island 2 is going to come to Steam. While the Epic Game Store has managed to grow in popularity, it doesn’t have the same reach as Steam, locking the game away from an even bigger audience. Epic’s exclusivity deals typically last up to a year, though, so if Dead Island 2 doesn’t launch until next year that could indicate an unusually long contract between the two.

The other option is the Nintendo Switch, or if you want some wild speculation, the Nintendo Switch’s successor which is rumoured to hit shelves late next year.

As for Embracer, it’s in the middle of restructuring its business, including shutting down some studios, following its multiple years of buying everything it looked at, touched or even heard about from some guy down at the pub.
