The Thousand-Year Door is coming to Switch in 2024 – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews

During today’s Nintendo Direct a rather nice surprise popped up: a remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year door will launch on the Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Originally released in 2004, The Thousand-Year Door is widely consider the best game in the Paper Mario Series. In fact, on Metacritic the game holds a score of 87.

The remake’s graphics are certainly a lot better than the original, bringing it more in line with 2020’s Paper Mario: The Origami King. So far, though, the graphics are the only upgrade that Nintendo has mentioned.

If you don’t know much about the series, it features paper cut-out of Mario trying to defeat Bowser. Gameplay elements included battles taking place on stage before a live audience with timing being a critical part of the action. Doing well will even result in the audience throwing items to Mario. Because of the paper theme, Mario gets to do some pretty cool stuff like folding into a paper place. Later games in the series, though, received more criticism for their changes like removing a lot of the RPG elements and being more action-adventure orientated.

The first Paper Mario game was actually a sequel to Super Mario RPG, a remake of which is coming out later this year, hence the stronger focus on RPG mechanics in the first two Paper Mario titles. Changes in the first game’s development, though, lead to it becoming a standalone game
