Knights of the Old Republic Remake is disappearing from the Internet – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews
UPDATE: A spokesperson for Sony has told Kotaku that the trailer and other social media posts due to a music license expiring. The only music in the trailer is the main Star Wars theme, indicating that Disney would be the license holders in question.
*waves hand* This is not the remake you are looking for.
The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from Aspyr is looking less and less likely to happen as both Embracer and Sony seem to be making some effort to remove its existence from the Internet, sparking worry that the project has indeed been cancelled by its Sith masters.
The remake has had a pretty rough development cycle. After numerous leaks Sony and Aspyr officially revealed the Knights of the Old Republic Remake in 2021, saying it would be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive at launch and come to PC. The reveal generated a lot of buzz and rightfully so considering how well regarded Knights of the Old Republic is.
Then in May 2022 Embracer, who owns Aspyr, announced that Saber Interactive would be helping develop the game as well. Just months after that reports began circulating that the project was in serious trouble. Jason Schrier of Bloomberg stated that several sources had told him the game was on pause indefinitely. Apparently, too much money had been spent on the demo, the project was not sustainable and wasn’t nearly ready for its planned 2022 release, with 2025 being more likely.
Just a month later, Embracer stated that one of its triple-A projects had been transitioned to another studio. Schrier confirmed that the project was Knights of the Old Republic Remake and that Aspyr had been removed, with Saber taking over completely.
Meanwhile, Aspyr got itself in some hot water after cancelling the promised DLC for Knights of the Old Republic II.
All this brings us to now. The original announcement trailer for the Knights of the Old Republic has been made private, and numerous social media posts, including the announcement Tweet from Sony, have been deleted. While this does not equate to an official announcement, it has sparked discussion as to whether the project has been shelved.
Earlier this year during an earnings call Embracer’s CEO said, “I have no further comments.” when an investor asked about the current status of the Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Embracer is also currently going through a massive restructuring program that has resulted in studios such as Volition being shut down and rumours of Gearbox potentially getting sold. After years of snapping up studios, it seems Embracer is struggling to stay afloat, and KOTOR may be the latest victim of their avarice.
