Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation game ever, and sold over 2.5 million copies – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews

We all knew that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would be heroic when it came to sales, but the question was exactly how impressive it would be. According to Insomniac and Sony, it’s the fastest-selling PlayStation title in history, beating out the previous record-holder and handily destroying both of the previous two Spidey titles.

“Great news, Spidey fans,” reads a Tweet from the official PlayStation account, “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sold more than 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours. Thanks for making this a high-flying launch!”

There’s an important detail hidden in the Tweet: 2.5 million have been sold through, not just shipped. Shipped copies refer to copies that have been sold to brick-and-mortar stores where they could potentially sit for a long time, whereas copies “sold through” specifically refer to copies that have actually been sold to customers, both digital and physical.

According to Sony, these numbers make Marve’s Spider-Man 2 the fastest-selling PlayStation game ever, beating out the previous holder God of War: Ragnarock which sold through 5.1 million copies in its first week, although Sony didn’t provide any data for its first day of sales.

As for the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game, it sold through 3.3 million in 3 days. Again, no specific data was ever shared for the first 24-hours which does make direct comparisons difficult. In other words, we have to take Sony at their word when it comes to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sales.

But it’s not difficult to imagine them being right. The hype for this sequel has been insane, and its critical reception has made Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 the 8th best game of the year according to Opencritic.

The only question left is how Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will stack up by the end of the year. With a few months of 2023, does it have a chance of becoming the highest-selling game of the year? Currently, Hogwarts Legacy holds that position, although its reign is hotly contended because The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sits in second place and Nintendo does not report digital sales data, meaning we don’t know Tears of the Kindoms true power.

Keep an eye out for my review coming soon.
