Knights of the Old Republic remake is alive! Maybe – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews
At this point, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has more twists and turns in its tale than Anakin Skywalker’s life story. It was originally being developed by Aspyr but seemingly got handed over to Saber Interactive, and then in September Sony, who was helping fund the project, began to delete all references to the game from its social media. That turned out to be due to licensing issues. Throughout it all has remained one question: is the remake happening or not?
Well, according to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grub, it isn’t it. Speaking on his Game Mess Morning podcast, Jeff Grubb said: “The rumour was that it got taken away from Aspyr, which has done a lot of these Star Wars remasters and moved over to Saber Interactive. There have been rumours that it’s moved elsewhere since then. I want to clear it up – this game is not being worked on right now, full stop. This game is not being worked on in any way at any studio.”
Grubb also seems to believe that Sony has pulled out of the project. He said, “It seems deader than dogshit because that game feels like it cannot happen without a partner like Sony, because Sony is out, and because Lucasfilm doesn’t like spending money on games anymore.”
Embracer, the struggling corporation that owns Aspyr and Saber Interactive, isn’t helping the situation. Embracer boss Lars Wingford was asked about the remake at a recent investor call and he replied by saying, “I notice that anything I say to this becomes a headline” and then refused to elaborate further. Ironically, about a million headlines immediately popped up, all quoting him.
But Jason Schrier of Bloomberg thinks the game is still alive. He posted on X: “Can’t say whether the KoTOR Remake will ever actually come out, but yes, two people from Saber Interactive tell me they’re still on it, despite recent rumors that nobody is working on the game”
So there we have it: two very different opinions from two people who have both proven reliable in the past. If Grubb is right and Sony has decided to withdraw then Embracer will likely be scrambling to find a new partner, though if what Schrier said is accurate it’s possible they’ve either already found one or Saber and Embracer have decided to foot the bill themselves. Considering the financial trouble Embracer is in currently, that doesn’t seem likely.
Until we hear something from Embracer or Saber Interactive themselves, then, the only thing we know for certain is that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’s development has been a mess.
