The 2023 Game Awards celebrated one of the strongest years we’ve ever had in the history of videogames. This year there was whopping 31 categories, ranging from the best overall Game of the Year all the way to the Best Esports Event.
The show is officially in the books and it was a lengthy one! Clocking in at 3 hours (not including the pre-show) it did start to drag toward the end. And despite the length, it still feels like the developers don’t get anywhere near enough time on the stage when accepting their awards, getting ushered off so that the next ad reel can be rolled.
Still, it’s always nice to see everyone’s hard word and passion being rewarded with a hefty chunk of metal.
And, of course, there were plenty of Geoff Keighley’s “World Premieres!” to enjoy. There was some pretty cool surprises, including Arkane working on Marvel’s Blade, some free DLC for God of War: Ragnarok, Kojima appearing and more.
Best of all, nobody managed to invade the stage this year.
The big winner this year was Baldur’s Gate 3 which managed to capture Game of the Year, plus 5 other award wins out of its 7 nominations. Well done, Larian, it’s very well deserved.
Alan Wake 2 also came out of the show dripping in awards. Remedy took home 3 awards, including Best Narrative and Best Game Direction, and had 8 nominations in total.
