How did Microsoft do with the Xbox Developer Direct?

Three weeks into 2024 and we’ve already got a fantastic line-up of Xbox exclusives to look forward to thanks to this week’s Xbox Developer Direct, which showcased four Microsoft exclusives that will all be dropping in 2024.

We finally got our first look at Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Coming to us from MachineGames, it looks absolutely fantastic, with the Wolfenstein developer’s Nazi-punching heritage on full display. The team made the bold choice to go mostly first-person, like their previous games, when many were expecting it to be a third-person, Uncharted sort of adventure. I was on team third-person too, but from the gameplay footage we’ve seen, I think we’re onto a winner.

We also saw more of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, along with an all important release date of May 21. According to the developers, Hellblade 2 will be about the same length as the first game, clocking in at around 8 hours. It’s also only coming out as a digital release, which has turned some fans off, but it looks absolutely stunning and we can’t wait.

Ara: History Untold was also at the show, putting a new spin on the classic Civilisation formula by trying to eliminate the “optimal strategy” problem that plagues the genre. This one is a PC exclusive for the time being, but there’s a good chance that it comes to Xbox further down the line. It will launch into PC Game Pass this summer.

Finally, there was Avowed, the fantasy RPG coming from Obsidian, the legendary team behind The Outer Worlds and Fallout New Vegas. We got a much better look at the combat system, which seems to involve a lot of juggling your various weapons and spells.. We’re excited to see more.

Overall, we thought it was a really strong showing for Microsoft, intelligently focusing on the games we’ll be playing this year and not wasting time showing stuff that’s still years out. But how do you think Microsoft did with the Xbox Developer Direct? Excellent showing? Dreadful? Somewhere in the middle? Let us know by voting below, and comment to let us know which game you’re most excited for.
