Xbox adds more features to handheld-style compact mode for PC app
New Compact Mode features being tested for the Xbox app on PC
As revealed on Xbox Wire, the Compact Mode interface is getting more features for a better experience when using the Xbox app on handheld PCs and smaller Windows-based screens. Right now the features are being tested via PC Gaming Preview Insiders, but they should roll out to all players in due time.
Much like the main PC app and on your Xbox console, the Compact Mode is getting a “Jump back in” feature, which shows the last nine games you played on your home screen so you can continue playing immediately. When you click on the game you’ll be taken straight to its game hub where you can begin playing without much hassle — alternatively, right-clicking or hitting the menu button will give you an option to launch straight into the game. Improvements to the friends panel when using a controller (or handheld controls) have also been made.
While Microsoft is yet to announce an Xbox handheld, it’s certainly feeling like the company is preparing for one — Phil Spencer recently spoke about handhelds. With the Xbox Games Showcase just around the corner, perhaps we’ll find out if dedicated hardware is on the horizon.
