RPGs dominated nine of 10 days during Golden Week thanks to Fate Grand/Order, Mo

  • Golden Week 2024 saw $320 generated in mobile game revenue
  • Fate Grand/Order was the only game to exceed $15 million during the holiday

Fate Grand/Order made more revenue in Japan than any other mobile game during Golden Week 2024, one of the country’s biggest holidays of the year.

The period typically sees revenues surge across various industries as many Japanese take time off work. Some companies even close completely from April 29th to May 5th, giving citizens extra time to spend on leisure activities like gaming.

According to Sensor Tower (and as reported by Famitsu), this year’s Golden Week saw Fate Grand/Order top Japan’s mobile revenue chart for the second year running – the only game to exceed $15 million over the holiday.

Monster Strike rose the ranks from third to second for revenue and took an “overwhelming” lead over any other game’s daily average users – more than triple Fate Grand/Order’s, even.

The golden genre

Sensor Tower states that Golden Week 2024 generated less mobile game revenue than in 2023, down from $380 million to $320 million. Of the top 10 revenue generators, four came from Japanese publishers this year compared to six in 2023, meaning over half the list now comprises overseas titles.

Among the top 10, Fate Grand/Order and Monster Strike were joined by HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, Hypergraph’s Arknights, and Shift Up’s Goddess of Victory: Nikke, showing RPGs continue to dominate in Japan despite a 24% revenue decline in Q1.

Fate Grand/Order led in revenue for five of Sensor Tower’s 10-day period while Monster Strike led four, meaning an RPG took the top revenue spot for nine of 10 days. GungHo’s match-3 game Puzzle & Dragons was on top for one day.

A puzzle game outpacing an RPG for a day also tracks with Sensor Tower’s Q1 2024 Mobile Market Overview, which revealed 17% year-on-year revenue growth for the genre in Japan, second only to casino’s surge.
