Ubisoft confirms that is still working on “exciting projects” for the Driver series, but the TV show has been cancelled – WGB

Ubisoft has confirmed that plans for a live-action TV show based on the classic Driver franchise has been scrapped. But in good news, the company is still working on other projects relating to Driver.

The pertinent information comes from Stephen Totilo of Game File who combed through Ubisoft’s recent 356-page annual report, an arduous task indeed. The article contains a lot of intriguing snippets relating to all sorts of things such as generative AI and even how many teenagers Ubisoft employs. (14, apparently, which is down from 17 the year before.)

According to Totilo, Ubisoft has ditched plans to create a live-action Driver. A deal was signed with streaming-newcomer Binge back in 2021 to create a live-action version of Driver.

“Working with Binge will allow us to bring a Driver series directly to the audience who is most passionate about seeing this franchise come to life.” said Allan Ungar for Binge at the time.

Since then, no Driver tv show has come sliding onto our screens.

Stephen Totilo noted that in the documents a Ubisoft subsidiary by the name of Hotrod Tanner LLC, named after Driver protagonist Tanner, had been closed.

“We are no longer moving forward with our partnership with Binge for a Driver series,” a Ubisoft spokesperson told Totilo.

“We are actively working on other exciting projects related to the franchise and can’t wait to share more information in the future,” added Ubisoft.

Exactly what that means is, of course, open for speculation. There hasn’t been a new entry in the Driver series for over a decade, the last one being Driver: San Franciso in 2011 which was a weird but actually quite enjoyable spin on the series where players could possess cars. No, I’m not making that up. Well, to be fair, you possessed the people driving the cars rather than the cars themselves, but still.

A new game would be fantastic, but it could be a movie or TV show in development.
