Double Fine’s excellent Psychonauts 2 documentary series just got a surprise new episode

Last year, Double Fine released a free 32-part documentary on the making of Psychonauts 2 — perfect for watching after unlocking all of those Psychonauts 2 achievements. The series, titled PsychOdyssey, offers possibly the best behind-the-scenes look at game development, and now, Double Fine has released a surprise 33rd episode of PsychOdyssey.

Available for free on YouTube, the documentary series was filmed over seven years (technically now nine if you include this surprise new episode) and captured how the creatives at Double Fine made one of 2021’s finest platformers. The documentary takes you on an incredible journey through Psychonauts 2’s development and even covers the period when Microsoft acquired Double Fine. For anyone who is interested in how games are made, PsychOdyssey is essential viewing.

Now, a surprise new episode has just been released. Episode 33: We Wrote It Down, sees the Double Fine team “reflect on the launch of Psychonauts 2 and the PsychOdyssey documentary series while looking to the future and a return to smaller projects.”

Double Fine has also announced that PsychOdyssey is getting a Blu-ray release. The Double Fine Psychodyssey Blu-Ray Collector’s Set is now available to preorder on Limited Run for $74.99. For those interested, you will want to be quick as the Blu-ray is limited to just 2,000 copies.
