The Thing: Remastered – A Must-Play for Horror Fans on PC and Console?
It’s not everyday that gamers are treated to a remaster of a early 2000s cult classic, which was itself an adaptation of an even cultier classic film, but today is indeed that day. With The Thing: Remastered, developers Nightdive Studios and Computer Artworks are bringing 2002’s squad-based shooter The Thing to a modern audience.
Of course, The Thing video game was an adaptation of the iconic horror movie of the same name, from way back when in 1982.
A New Horrifying Tale
We say ‘adaptation’ lightly, however, as The Thing video game is in fact a chronological sequel to the film. Set after the movie’s events, The Thing: Remastered – now available on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC – tells the tale of Cpt J.F. Blake, who is sent to Antarctica to investigate the tragedy of the Outpost 31 research facility. What he finds within is, unsurprisingly, absolutely horrific, as mutant beings have set up shop and are intent on ripping Blake to pieces.
Gameplay-wise, fans of the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill entries will be more than at home here, as this is good old-fashioned third-person survival horror fare. Expect to be making use of limited ammunition as you fight against freakish eldritch monsters, and not least The Thing itself.
For the uninitiated, The Thing assumes the form of those that it kills, ensuring that nobody can be trusted…
