Nintendo Predictions for 2025: What’s Next?

Another year is here and that means it’s time for our yearly Nintendo predictions! Put on your thinking caps 🧢 and join us as we try to guess what Nintendo will do next! 🧐

Check out last year’s predictions HERE to see how we did!

For Justin in 2024:

  1. Metroid Prime 4 will finally, finally be shown off to the world again, it will be one of the key games to show off the visual capabilities of the Switch successor
    1. 0.5 point, we finally got a new trailer but nothing yet a key game for the Switch successor but here’s hoping for 2025!
  2. The Pokémon company will announce Black/White remakes this year, most likely during a Pokémon Presents on Pokémon Day
    1. 🚫 Nope
  3. The Switch successor will be announced AND released this year, I don’t think it’ll be called ‘New Nintendo Switch’ (at least I hope not 😅) but I could see something like that such as Switch Nitro or something that still includes the ‘Switch’ name while also indicating a big step up from a processing power perspective.
    1. 🚫 Nope 😭
  4. We are due for a new 3D Mario, I could see it launch with the new system
    1. 🚫 Nope
  5. Metroid Prime 2 will get a remaster announced this year and maybe MP3 but I could see that being released later
    1. 🚫 Nope
  6. The F-Zero franchise will get some more love in 2024
    1. Yep, although I was hoping for a new game or remaster of F-Zero GX, we still got a ton of updates to F-Zero 99 as well as some NSO love for the series. Maybe this will build to a new game in 2025!
  7. Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD will get ported to the Switch in 2024
    1. 🚫 Nope
  8. Nintendo will continue to sell the original Switch alongside the successor
    1. 🚫 Nope / we don’t know yet
  9. Backwards compatibility will be a main selling point of the new system, all Switch games will carry over and be able to be played Day 1 on the new system, this will be Nintendo’s first digital account setup that has full carry over
    1. Yes, this was one of the only things Nintendo officially confirmed in 2024 about the successor
  10. Nintendo made good strides with 3rd party support with the Switch. I think that will continue and I think we’ll get a major franchise announced for the successor that even the Switch missed out on (think franchises like Madden, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Far Cry, etc)
    1. 🚫 Nope / we don’t know yet

Wild Cards (2 points each)

  1. I said this last year that we’d get a new Donkey Kong game announced but I think 2024 is the year especially with the new system launching and the new DK section going in at Super Nintendo World in Japan
    1. 🚫 Nope, we did get an HD port announced but I’m not counting that. I was speaking about a brand new DK game, hopefully someday!
  2. The next Mario Kart game will also be announced
    1. 🚫 Nope

That’s 2.5 points for Justin

For Trev in 2024:

  1. While they’re not really my thing, Nintendo will add another new mobile app or game in 2024. Speaking of…
    1. Yes, Pokemon TCG Pocket
  2. Forget the mobile Dr. Mario World or the ports available on Switch Online. The puzzle series will get a brand new entry. And unlike the download-only entries such as Online RX, Miracle Cure, or Express, it will be a full-fledged release (if this does come true, expect it to make Justin’s Top 5)
    1. 🚫 Nope 😭
  3. There was already a rumor on this one a couple of months back due to a trademark filing. But to celebrate its 10th anniversary, one of the best-selling 3DS games, Tomodachi Life, will arrive on Switch in one form or another.
    1. 🚫 Nope
  4. Along similar lines, I predicted last year that the 3DS hit, A Link Between Worlds, would get an HD update to celebrate its 10th anniversary. That never occurred, but I still believe the Link’s Awakening HD engine will be used again—the game’s, after all, among the top 25 best-selling Switch games ever. So, I’m revisiting a prediction I initially made in 2020, speculating that the Oracle games will receive the remake treatment.
    1. 0.5 point, the engine was used again but on a completely new game (Echoes of Wisdom) instead of the Oracle games
  5. Nintendo will offer something sizable to attract new or returning Switch Online players. Something beyond game trials and sporadic releases of older games. Think free new content.
    1. 🚫 Nope
  6. I’ve never predicted a Switch follow-up, even though those rumors have been flying for years. That finally changes now, as I predict that Nintendo will announce (though not necessarily release) a Switch successor in 2024.
    1. Yes, Nintendo officially confirmed it but did not release it
  7. If the above is true, some footage of launch games will likely be shown. Metroid Prime 4, finally?
    1. 🚫 Nope, MP4 was shown but we don’t know if it’s a launch game yet
  8. If a new console/system/hybrid won’t be out until 2025, Nintendo will want to ensure they’re still moving the various Switch models on the market. Expect a mixture of budget ports, price cuts, and a Nintendo Select line of best sellers.
    1. 🚫 Nope, only bundles again from Nintendo
  9. Speaking of best sellers, the Switch has (at the time I write this) over 80 games that have passed 1 million copies sold. What new games could be added to that list? When all’s said and done, can the million seller game list hit triple digits? Probably not in 2024, but there will be a few new additions.
    1. Yes, not quite triple digits but 97 games (according to Wikipedia)
  10. What’ll be new with amiibo in the coming year? Given all I’ve heard about the unique characters in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, I wouldn’t be surprised (and happy) to see some arrive when the game returns for a Switch release.
    1. 🚫 Nope

Wild Cards (2 points each)

  1. Skylanders will return in one form or another. Given the relationship with past games on Nintendo hardware, I think the new release will eventually prove most popular with Nintendo fans. Just don’t be greedy, Activision!
    1. 🚫 Nope
  2. As more and more depart Twitter, Pure Nintendo will find a new audience on the Blue Sky social app.
    1. ✅ Yes! Find us on Blue Sky – Pure Nintendo on Bluesky

That’s 5.5 points for Trev

Trev took the win this year since Nintendo decided to wait a bit longer for the Switch 2. Here’s hoping 2025 is the year! 😄

Justin’s Predictions

  1. GameCube games will be announced for the Nintendo Switch Online service.
  2. A new Mario Kart game will be announced in 2025, hopefully releasing this year too.
  3. 2024 was a rare year without a new Pokémon game (not counting Pokémon TCG Pocket, even though I have been enjoying it myself). I think we’ll see Pokémon Legends ZA release in 2025 and maybe a tease at another Pokémon game.
  4. I think we’ll see a new Kirby game this year – it could be a port of an older game but here’s hoping for a follow up to Forgotten Land.
  5. (Switch 2 related – Carry over from 2024) – The Switch successor will be announced AND released this year. I could see it being called simply Nintendo Switch 2 to be the least confusing on everyone.
  6. (Switch 2 related – Carry over from 2024) – We are due for a new 3D Mario, I could see it launch with the new system.
  7. (Switch 2 related – Carry over from 2024) – Nintendo will continue to sell the original Switch alongside the successor.
  8. (Switch 2 related – Carry over from 2024) – Backwards compatibility will be a main selling point of the new system, all Switch games will carry over and be able to be played Day 1 on the new system, this will be Nintendo’s first digital account setup that has full carry over.
  9. (Switch 2 related – Carry over from 2024) – Nintendo made good strides with 3rd party support with the Switch. I think that will continue and I think we’ll get a major franchise announced for the successor that even the Switch missed out on (think franchises like Madden, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Far Cry, etc)
  10. (Switch 2 related) – I think the Switch 2 will launch at $399.
    1. For context:
      1. GameCube price at launch: $199
      2. Wii price at launch: $249
      3. Wii U price at launch: $299 (deluxe version at $349)
      4. Switch price at launch: $299
      5. Switch OLED price at launch: $349

Wild Cards*

  1. It hasn’t been that long since we’ve had a Zelda game but I feel like Nintendo will at least announce a Zelda game for the Switch 2’s first year, even if it’s just the oft-rumored Twilight Princess HD and/or Wind Waker HD ports.
  2. A new Wave Race will be announced.

Trev’s Predictions

  1. The Nintendo Switch will be the first console to hit 160 million, surpassing both the DS and PS2 in the process. Will Jim Ryan move the goalposts again and claim the PS2 actually sold 170 million?
  2. We’ll get a movie-themed Direct for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. 2 and/or Zelda film(s). The vocals will generate chatter, Mario voiced by Chris Pratt in the former, and Linke voiced by (likely) nobody in the latter.
  3. I predict Nintendo will discontinue the original Switch models, with only the Lite and OLED remaining at retail. Expect bundles for each pushing Switch Online, with free offers. Along those lines…
  4. Nintendo Switch Online will see a sizable alteration. Whether it’s the addition of new consoles like GameCube, changing the price structure, or merging plans, expect a change to come with the introduction of new hardware.
  5. Speaking of new hardware, Switch 2 (or whatever it’s called) will have a pack-in game at launch, unlike its predecessor. Will it be a Mario game like the SNES had? A family game like Wii? Or one highlighting whatever the unique hardware features are a la Wii U.
  6. At least one launch window title for the new hardware will incorporate motion controls, leading to decry or delight depending on if you’re a fan or not.
  7. 2025 will bring a new console, but I predict some older hardware features will return. I’m thinking along the lines of Nintendo Badge Arcade or some of the Wii channels (which have come back into awareness thanks to Nintendo Music)
  8. Not only will popular amiibo keep seeing re-releases, but new ones will be introduced to tie in with at least one launch window game.
  9. More in the gaming industry will continue to flee Twitter for Bluesky. Perhaps Nintendo will even reintroduce screen-sharing integration.
  10. Despite new hardware, Nintendo will keep supporting the Switch. Expect sizable updates to some popular games (new content fee DLC updates) plus ports of older hits (Metroid Prime 2 & 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2, etc.)

Wild Cards*

  1. Nintendo hasn’t been known for traditional sports games for quite some time, but in the past, they’ve worked with stars like Ken Griffey Jr. and Kobe Bryant. Will 2025 be a year where we get a first-party sports sim? It might be a long shot, but I’ll say yes.
  2. 2025 will be ten years since Tri Force Heroes and twenty since Four Swords Adventures. I predict some multiplayer Zelda love in one form or another.

*Wild Cards are worth 2 points
