Rex and the Galactic Plague – A teased blaster for the Commodore Amiga by Hoyster Games [v2 DEMO UPDATE]

Another Scorpion Engine game has appeared, as looking through the Commodore Amiga Facebook group, I’ve come across a new work in progress arcade shooter called ‘Galactic Plague’ by Hoyster Games with music by Matt McGuire. A game in which the developer says” Just for the fun of it, I’ve been creating my own Amiga game in Scorpion Engine, and this based on a game I wanted to make in SEUCK way back in 1992!” While he does state he’s having fun with it however, provided below is some early screenshots of the game.

Here’s the latest from the  description. “Introducing K9 and the Galactic Plague, a game that has lived inside my head since I was 15 (in the year 19-something-something). I originally started building this in SEUCK all those years ago, although it was never completed. In 2023 I was made redundant and found myself picking up SEUCK for a quick go – a go that ended up lasting three hours on that day and months after that”.

“I had such fun building it and learning more about pixel art, but to my dismay I kept running into problems. My save game corrupted a number of times, leaving me to start all over again. On the third time this happened, with my enthusiasm sapped, a friend recommended Scorpion engine to me. As a non-coder and non-developer, I needed something a bit more ‘WYSIWYG’ and while Scorpion isn’t quite that, it was accessible enough for me to be able to jump in and learn the ropes.

“Nine months of learning later and hear I am, still hugely enjoying the process and pulling the game together. In the previous video ( now removed ), you can see a work in progress version of the game, taking you through the first four levels. More will follow soon, so if you like what you see keep checking back for further updates!”

UPDATE  : The developer has release an update based on the feedback he received from the initial release of the 2 level demo. As in his words  “I am really grateful that so many have downloaded the demo, and seeing the YouTube playthroughs in particular was really helpful in identifying some of the issues in the game. The update addresses some events that didn’t trigger reliably, which meant that for some they played level one without the music. I also took the opportunity to fine tune other elements, to make it play more smoothly and remove some confusing elements”.

FUTURE DETAILS : The full game will have seven thrilling levels and will be available in the spring. Although the game is functionally complete, it’s still a way from finished and the next few months will be spent polishing and refining. Please share your feedback in the comments. Thank you for playing!
