Sony Permanently Cuts The Price of PS VR2 By Over 27% – WGB

Sony has announced a drastic price cut for the PS VR2 as it enters its second year on the market. Here in the UK, the recommended retail price is dropping to £399.99. It launched in February of 2023 for £529.99. That’s a fairly drastic drop of over 27%.

The rest of the world will be able to pick up the system for $399.99 / €449.99 / ¥66,980, starting in March. For the US, that’s a 31% decrease in price.

Keep in mind, that for the same price you can actually get the Call of thr Mountain bundle, which nets you the headset alongside a copy of Horizon: Call of the Mountain, one of the few first-party PlayStations games native to the headset.

“With recently released hits like Alien: Rogue Incursion, Skydance’s Behemoth, and Metro Awakening VR, and exciting new game launches on the way including Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk, it’s never been a better time to jump into the action with PS VR2,” said Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing. “Using the PS VR2 PC Adapter, players will also have access to browse, buy and play thousands of virtual reality games on Steam.”

While it’s true that the PS VR2 has received a few updates recently, there’s a strong feeling among the VR community that Sony’s support of the headset has been lacking. Only a few first-party games have been released so far, leaving other publishers and developers to keep players satiated. In other words, there’s a worry that Sony has all but abandoned the PS VR2 already, likely due to fairly low sales.

That said, it’s still an impressive VR headset in its own right, and perhaps this new price point may tempt a few more people to pick one up. After all, it’s stuck in something of a self-fulfilling fantasy right now – there aren’t enough players to warrant Sony and others making big new exclusives for it, but there isn’t enough big new exclusives to entice people to buy one, either.
