007 First Light Gameplay Deep Dive Reveals Release Date, Mechanics, Pre-orders, Legacy Edition & New James Bond

The mission is assigned, the gear is issued, and the world is waiting for a new kind of Bond.

During an exclusive Sony PlayStation State of Play, developer IO Interactive has finally unveiled the first gameplay deep dive for 007 First Light, their highly anticipated James Bond origin story.

This new look at the game also came with a confirmed release date: the mission will officially begin on March 27th, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

This is our first, thrilling look at the aspiring spy in action, showcasing the sophisticated blend of stealth, action, and improvisation that will define this brand-new, standalone adventure.

From Announcement to Action

When we first covered the original announcement of 007 First Light back in June, we were hugely excited by the prospect of an origin story from the masters of the spy fantasy genre at IO Interactive. Today, that potential has been fully realised with our first look at how the game will actually play, moving from a conceptual teaser to a tangible, feature-rich gameplay experience.

With 007 First Light, we’re building a wholly original James Bond experience from the ground up, one that blends the sharp tension of espionage with the bold spectacle the franchise is known for,” said Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive. “The gameplay is rooted in our signature approach to immersive design, combining stealth, action, and creativity in a way that feels uniquely tailored to Bond.

The Creative Approach: Your License to Improvise

At the core of the gameplay is the “Creative Approach,” a system that allows you to tackle objectives using a variety of different skills, ensuring every mission can be played your way.

  • Spycraft – Stealth and observation are just as powerful as any weapon. You can eavesdrop on key conversations, pickpocket vital items, and inspect the environment for hidden clues to open up new pathways and opportunities.
  • Instinct – This signature gameplay feature is a versatile resource that can turn the tide in any situation. You can use your Instinct to lure enemies into vulnerable positions, bluff your way out of suspicion, or sharpen your focus for greater precision and power in combat, capturing Bond’s quick thinking and adaptability.
  • Gadgets – The iconic tools from Q Branch are woven directly into moment-to-moment gameplay. From hacking locks to creating distractions, these versatile gadgets will expand your strategic options for stealth and tactical improvisation.
  • Combat – The combat in 007 First Light is designed to be fast, fluid, and true to Bond’s character. It blends precision ranged shooting with visceral, cinematic melee encounters. A unique escalation system reflects his measured use of force; when enemies escalate to lethal force, Bond is granted his License to Kill, unlocking his expert marksmanship with firearms.

Meet the Cast and Explore the Locales

The gameplay deep dive also revealed the star-studded cast, with Patrick Gibson (The OA) officially confirmed to be portraying the young James Bond. He will be joined by a host of new and returning characters, including M (Priyanga Burford), Q (Alastair Mackenzie), and Bond’s mentor, John Greenway (Lennie James – Fear the Walking Dead).
