Thanks to @PixelCNinja and Saberman, I’ve learned that Str1der has shown a work-in-progress proof of concept for Shinobi (1989) on the Commodore Amiga 500. While the project began when the developer experimented with recolouring visual assets from the Sega Master System version , he found the updated aesthetic was so compelling that it inspired him to work on this version of Shinobi. Currently, Joe Musashi’s movements and an expansive 8-way scrolling map function seamlessly, demonstrating the stock A500 hardware’s impressive ability to process a fast-paced action environment.
(Visually, the original barely looks any better than its 8-bit Amstrad CPC counterpart)
Proof of concept by Str1der
The technical outlook for this project remains highly ambitious yet realistic about the system’s capabilities. Str1der anticipates that the A500 can smoothly handle about four to five enemy sprites active on the screen at once without dropping below a crisp 50 frames per second. The fundamental gameplay loop is already heavily established, with full animations implemented for essential movements like walking, jumping, crouching, duck-walking, and high-jumping. While I’m not sure if this is ever going to be finished, you can at least try the latest build available through EAB.
[UPDATE] – The developer has released a new build with the following being said “adf version 0.06b with Solid Gold’s PTPlayer playing the mod music by saimon69, some performance issues introduced, so until (and if) fixed, bobs logic now updates every 2nd frame.”
