A Shooter You Play by Sound Alone
Apotheorasis • Lab of the Blind Gods is a shooter with no visuals. You’ll need to listen carefully to know where to move, sneak, and aim your shots.
An accident has cost you your site and voice. And your memories, in case it wasn’t bad enough. Luckily, something calls out to you in your new darkness. Something that promises to be helpful, although it may be a bit hard to trust it right now. Still, you’re all alone besides this voice, so what else can you do? Well, you can listen for anything else your ears happen to pick up in the game’s halls and passageways, catching the noise of enemies, clues, and traps along the way. If you’ve got good listening skills, you’ll go far in this game.
As a sighted person, learning to navigate by sound was daunting and compelling. It takes a lot of getting used to, but the developers have done a great job of putting together a soundscape that helps you figure out where to go (so long as you have some decent headphones on). It’s a disorienting experience, and becomes even moreso when the gunplay and trap-dodging comes into it. It’s hard to get a bead on targets that you can’t see (at first), but there’s something incredibly exhilarating about pulling off a shot on something you can’t see at all. It’s terrifying when you miss, though, knowing something is rushing towards you that you can’t see (thank goodness for your shield). If you relax and let your ears do the work, though, it’s an experience like few other games I’ve tried.
Apotheorasis • Lab of the Blind Gods is a thrilling experience in gunplay while being unable to see anything. Again, it takes a bit to let go of your reliance on your eyes to play the game well, but once you settle in, it offers a unique FPS experience.
Apotheorasis • Lab of the Blind Gods is available now on Steam.
