Street Fighter 2 Nintendo Entertainment System Unofficial Port In Progress – Retro Gaming Magazine
Who remembers staying up late playing video games by the light of a CRT television? This October 10 update for Metal Wolf Chaos, an early title from the now defunct developer From Software is quite real.
The original NES Street Fighter 2 may soon be available for retro gamers. A fan made port of the game may even run on actual NES hardware!
An arcade phenomenon that’s coming to your TV
With sales figures that have yet to be eclipsed, Street Fighter 2 is not only arguably the greatest fighting game of all time, but one for the ages.
I remember many times when we would go to the gas station and there was a Street Fighter 2 arcade machine in the corner.
The following year, the original Street Fighter 2 game would come home to the Super Nintendo console. This version of the popular fighting game would sell over six million copies, generating revenues upwards of $130 million USD.
After one year of the Sega Genesis receiving Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition, Nintendo released Super Street Fighter II on their new console.
Bringing the experience to the NES
Officially, SF2 has never been released on the Nintendo Entertainment System. With hacks and imports from unlicensed developers of different levels of quality, however, unauthentic versions exist to play.
Street Fighter 2 Deluxe NES as the development team are referring to it, is being spearheaded by ROMHacking.net user “sebastianangel”. In development for about a year according to Eventhubs.com, this port makes cunning use of another NES game.
The team behind Street Fighter 2 Deluxe NES are using the same mapper as Castlevania 3 by Konami. This means technically, fans could see a physical woflow version of the game! Of course, Capcom will put a stop to that so no need to breath too heavily on it happening.
A heartfelt eulogy for Street Fighter II
Fox Cunning has posted a gameplay video of Street Fighter on Twitter. We see Chun-Li take on Ryu, and the animations are bright and well-done. This may represent a return to the classic games without any change in line scrolling, parallax scrolling, or level design from old school Street Fighter.
There are a lot of upcoming characters released, and so the creators haven’t made any decisions yet concerning who will be cut. Furthermore, no cuts have been made yet.
Gaming demakes like Defender and Mario can be made much more quickly and with a good AI and mechanical keyboard.
It remains to be seen what the other choices will be. I am unsure about any cuts that may need to be made either.
