Overwatch 2 devs discuss Mythic Skins and the potential for brand crossovers

We’re only a week away from the launch of Overwatch 2, and more details are starting to pour out about the game itself, as well as the developers’ plans for future content. In a recent interview with Game Informer, Overwatch’s director Aaron Keller elaborated on the sequel’s new Mythic Skins. These are customizable cosmetics that can be earned and stylized by players, that apparently took a lot of time and effort to produce.

“We put a lot of time into building our cosmetics. A Mythic Skin takes us over a year to make. It’s a massive investment for the team, and a massive amount of resources go into building these things. And we think it’s worth it.” Keller continues, “One of our values is to be able to put out the absolute coolest cosmetics we can, and we hope they can be seen as some of the very best in the industry.”

These skins feature multiple aspects that can be fully customized. Hopefully players find them to be as cool as the developers to make them worth unlocking. Meanwhile, Overwatch Vice President Jon Spector was asked about the possibility of featuring branded crossover content in Overwatch 2, similar to the way Fortnite incorporates characters from other media. It seems like that’s a possibility:

“I’m a big anime nerd myself. I think it’s super cool when I see Naruto appear in Fortnite. I don’t even play Fortnite, but that’s awesome. And as we look at the Overwatch 2 space, those are things that we’re interested in exploring. If and when we do that, one of our key values is to do it in a way that feels like a great fit for the Overwatch franchise.”

It sounds like seeing licensed characters in Overwatch 2 is something that could very well happen in the future, although nothing is confirmed as of yet. The new game will officially be released on Switch on October 4, 2022. Stay tuned to see how it plays and what the game might look like going into the future.
