Sakurai’s latest video talks about the development of Kirby Super Star

Masahiro Sakurai is back once again to share with us his wisdom, this time; he continues the introduction of the Kirby series. Last time, he talked about the development of Kirby’s Adventure (which you can check here), and now he delves into the third installment in the series, Kirby Super Star, which was released in 1996 for the SNES. Check out the video above.

Here are some bullet points from the video:

  • Shigeru Miyamoto asked Sakurai if he could make a two-player game since Super Mario was considered a fast-paced game.
  • Sakurai came up with the “Helper” system, where one of the two players would be the “leader” in which the camera would always follow, and the second player would be a supporting role. So if the second player ends up too far off-screen, they would teleport to the first player.
  • The second part of the development was the “Omnibus” collection format. In the game, you’ll find different types of scenarios on a board (menu), and each scenario offers a different kind of experience; this was made to prevent the game from being too long, where players would get tired and move to something else.
