‘Super Lone Survivor’ Hides New Frights in a Haunted, Lonely City
Super Lone Survivor is familiar yet unknown, bringing us back to a frightening city we’ve seen before that hides totally new terrors and triumphs within.
Creepy, hostile beings wander the city. Mysterious visions plague your dreams. Roads lead to terrifying places. Unfortunately, you still need to eat and take care of yourself. Maybe you can even find a way out of this place – assuming there IS a way out. This unsettling world will be your home for some time, and there’s a number of ways to survive while you’re here. Maybe you should kill those creatures before they kill you. Should you leave them alone and sneak by, instead? Will you try to keep yourself nourished with good food to keep up your strength, or will you just try to forget your hunger and exhaustion? It’s a bizarre place to try to survive, and no matter what route you pick, it’s hard to be sure it’s the right one.
This journey was uncertain and terrifying when it first hit in 2012 (and I loved it back then), but since then, there’s been time to figure out its nuances. I’ve come to a better understanding of its world and mechanics, and while I don’t feel confident I have all the answers about its story, I feel like I know the game very well. This new edition brings some new areas and storylines, though, as well as some different enemies and weapons. New tunes, too, which make an already-excellent soundtrack that much more haunting. These new additions inject further mystery into the game again, giving me more questions and uncertainties about this world.
I’m not typically keen on remakes, as they tend to pave over what came before in inelegant ways. Developer Jasper Byrne has only added to his previous vision, carefully slipping new questions into a game already filled with mysterious things. It makes for an incredible journey filled with brand new chilling uncertainties to delve into.
Super Lone Survivor will be made available today on Steam. It is projected to release on the Nintendo Switch in the near future.
