Retronauts Episode 630: Battle of the Master System Mascots
“Let them fight.”—Nintendo fans
Sega’s Master System was the company’s first honest attempt at bringing a console to the global market, and regardless of whether you played one or not, it certainly found an audience. However, one reason it never measured up to the massive success of the NES was Sega’s lack of a “face” of the brand, a singular leading man for children to associate with the system—or rodent, which they would discover in the 90s worked just as well.
Host Jeremy Parish looks back at these pre-Sonic contenders for Sega’s mascot throne, joined by Stuart Gipp, Kurt Kalata, and Nicole Express. No matter who wins, we win, because we get to have a podcast about old games!
