Schreckenstein 64 – A port of the fabulous Atari 800/XL exclusive game Schreckenstein by Peter Finze!
An early morning heads up for you all, as we’ve recently been informed that Rob Rafac has released the Atari XL/XE to Commodore 64 port of Schreckenstein. As in the words of the creator. “I have been working on a port of the fabulous Atari 800/XL-exclusive game Schreckenstein by Peter Finzel (not to be confused with the several C64 games with similar names), so I want to turn it loose on the community here”. To coincide with this news, Saberman has provided a video showing the game in action.
Here’s the latest technical blurb about this release from the info file provided. “It took a while to get back to it, but I’m happy to have completed a final release of my C64 port of Peter Finzel’s 1985 “Schreckenstein” for the Atari 800. This 100% version has greatly improved sound effect arbitration, faster (packed) loading, a pause feature, and a few bugfixes and speed optimizations. It taught me a lot about exploiting the VIC-II and the strengths/weaknesses of the Atari 800 and C64 graphics hardware–especially because when I started I knew nothing about the Atari and my VIC-II knowledge was frozen in 1985. Time for a new project…”.
