Stardew Valley creator leaves the door open for a sequel, but it doesn’t seem likely

As far as indie games go, Stardew Valley has been one of the most successful in recent memory. The game has sold an incredible 41 million units worldwide as of the end of 2024, so there’s no doubt that tally has ticked considerably higher since. With so many players in love with Stardew Valley, you might think a sequel would be all but inevitable. Turns out the creator of the game feels differently.

Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe dropped by the TigerBelly podcast to chat about the game, and eventually the discussion of a sequel came up. ConcernedApe in no way confirms a Stardew Valley 2, but he does leave room for it to happen. That said, it seems like the dev is more interested in just updating the current game while also moving on to other projects.

“I might eventually make a Stardew Valley 2, to be honest. It’s just so much easier to just add more stuff to Stardew Valley than to make a whole new game from scratch. The major systems are already all done. That’s the stuff that’s not fun to do. When I make an update, it’s like, you know – ‘oh, throw in this, throw in that. Let’s add green rain.’

I don’t want to just be the Stardew Valley guy. That’s why I’m making Haunted Chocolatier.”
