When it comes to the best way to play retro shooters on modern consoles, you can’t look past ININ Games’ Irem Collections. In recent years we saw both the Irem Collection Volume 1 (check out our full review here) and the Irem Collection Volume 2 launch onto Xbox, and now the Irem Collection Volume 3 is here to complete the trifecta!
Bombastic Chaos!
Now available on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch, the Irem Collection Volume 3 continues the tradition of packing in an anthology of retro titles, often based around explosive action.
Each title is a high-fantasy / sci-fi horizontal shoot ‘em up, with a suite of quality of life features including quick save/load, optional controller enhancements, and display filters to capture the original arcade vibe. You’ll also be able to test your skills against others using the in-built worldwide leaderboards.
Mr. Heli (Battle Chopper)
The first entry into the Irem Collection Volume 3 is 1987’s Mr. Heli (Battle Chopper). Adorably labelled a ‘cute ‘em up’, Mr. Heli debuted in Japanese arcades, captivating players with its hidden secrets, huge bosses, and ability to upgrade your weaponry to ensure your multi-directional shooting is top-notch.
Mystic Riders
1992’s Mystic Riders takes things to the fantasy realm, with the inclusion of broomsticks, giant sky turtles, and Mark the wizard (who else?!) ensuring that you’ll always be kept guessing what is around the corner.
Unlike the other two titles in this bundle, Mystic Riders also comes with local co-op, where Mark the wizard and Zeal the witch team-up once and for all!
Dragon Breed
And finally, the 1989 cult classic Dragon Breed is what happens when you breed R-Type with a dark and twisted fantasy apocalypse. Unsurprisingly, here you’ll be joining forces with Bahamoot the dragon, as it burns your enemies to a crisp.
