Borderlands 4 Is The Most Successful PC Launch Of The Series, But User Reviews Point To Poor Performance – WGB

Borderlands 4 has only been out for a few hours, but it has already become the most successful game in the series based on its Steam player numbers.

According to SteamDB, Borderlands 4 has already achieved over 200,000 peak concurrent players, surpassing the franchise’s previous Steam record by a considerable margin.

Before it clinched the top spot, the rankings were:

  1. Borderlands 2 – 124,678 (22 September 2012)
  2. Borderlands 3 – 93,820 (15 March 2020)
  3. Borderlands (original GOTY) – 23,655 (28 July 2012)

200,000 is a pretty solid opening number, and that will probably climb as we hit the weekend and more players have free time. Mind you, it’s not as good as the recently released Hollow Knight: Silksong, which managed well over double what Borderlands 4 did.

But while the numbers are good, the user reviews are painting a different story because Borderlands 4 is yet another triple-A title that has launched with serious issues. At the time of writing, it holds a “mixed” rating on Steam.

According to the user reviews, performance woes are the biggest problem right now. Even users on high-end hardware are reporting stuttering and low framerates. Other people are reporting being unable to progress past the start screen, crashes and other errors.

In other words, it’s yet another big release that is in dire need of updates. You might want to hold off buying it until Gearbox have put out a few patches. I’m not taking my own advice, though, because I’m an idiot who wants to review it, so I’m jumping in and hoping for the best.
