Outrun Sees Atari 2600 Port By Fan

The highly anticipated Outrun for Atari 2600 is finally here! Sega’s classic arcade racing game, Outrun, was certainly fun. While it never officially came to the 2600, fan GladQperson is doing it. If you are expecting arena perfect or anything related to other versions, then go ahead and skip this version-just be prepared-it’s apparently a zero chance for error version as shown in the video below.

Outrun a classic Sega arcade racer

Outrun was originally launched in arcades on September 8th, 1986. It was rather unique for an arcade game, as it was the first “time extend” racing game. Arcades at that time were struggling, but this series of games helped give Sega a leg up on the competition with their technologically advanced games that made use of a different type of graphic management.

In the racing game Outrun, dashes dotted around the map mimic one of Hollywood’s classic car chase movies – Star Wars. By evoking popular culture from another time, these subtle elements become a timeless piece of history that will never tire.

Port on the Atari 2600

Now, a new port out has a sleek interface. Outrun mimics Atari’s Night Driver arcade game – their casual aspects are stripped away in favor of more pertinent information on the sides of the road. First-time players will find this to be barebones at their disposal, but Sega anime night racer enthusiasts know what to expect from Outrun’s interface.

One thing that is clear about Outrun on Atari 2600 is there is zero room for error. Crashing, which happens often, is seen as a normal part of the gaming experience.

The car featured in this painting is creatively depicted with hair in the wind. Other stylistic features include changing skylines and touching tires.
