‘Kitsune Zero’ Clobbers Nasty Samurai and Vengeful Spirits
Kitsune Zero sees you leaping around and throwing fireballs at the awful local samurai, helping a kind, energetic fox girl bring back peace.
This game is DLC for political platformer Super Bernie World (and is a prequel to the upcoming Kitsune Tails), and as far as DLC goes, it’s pretty impressive with its ambition. I’m used to getting a few extra levels or some new weapons – not what feels like an entirely new game. Although it definitely travels to some familiar places and has a familiar play style if you’ve already helped Bernie stomp some turtles before. And likely familiar if you’ve played some other famous platformers, as you’ll gather power-ups that help you grow or fling fireballs, kick turtle shells around, and dump nasty enemies into lakes of lava.
It’s a solid platformer that brings some neat new enemies for you to bop on the head (or not, since those dang samurai like to walk around with their swords pointed up). Drawing from Japanese folklore, the game offers a wonderful array of creatures to leap on, and their unique actions and abilities breathe a lot of new life into the game. Plus, there’s a ton of new challenging platforming levels to work your way through that all feel quite different thanks to the monsters and jerk humans patrolling them. These can make your life even more difficult if you use the new Hard Mode, too. Although I don’t want to make the poor fox girl’s life any more difficult, personally.
Kitsune Zero gives you a great excuse to give Super Bernie World another spin by remixing and reinventing it, and offers an impressive look at what the future holds for Kitsune Tails.
Kitsune Zero will be made available today on Steam, although you need a copy of Super Bernie World (which is free) to use it.
