Dragon Quest Treasures came about from the producer’s interest in open world games

Dragon Quest Treasures is the latest spin-off of the Dragon Quest franchise, and it’s all about gathering treasure while fighting alongside your group of monster buddies. This is far from the first spin-off for Dragon Quest, but this one came about from a specific point of interest from the dev team.

Famitsu magazine spoke to producer Taichi Inuzuka to see how the idea came up for Dragon Quest Treasures, and he revealed that an interest in open-world games paved the way.

We were very interested in open-world games at the time, and we first tried thinking about what we could do by combining DQ and an open world setting. At this point, we asked Akira Toriyama for designs of Erik and Mia. While we didn’t have a complete concept yet, we decided to make them the main characters.
