Ex-Forza Horizon devs sign deal with Amazon for AAA racing game
Maverick Games and Amazon Games sign publishing deal for new AAA driving game
This as-yet unannounced game might not yet have a release date (or even a title), but it’ll come to Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5 and is a “narrative-led, open-world driving game” according to Amazon Games. Its development team includes Maverick Games studio head and creative director Mike Brown, who was previously creative director on Forza Horizon 5.
“I’ve been making racing games for nearly 20 years, and I know this community really well… I think there are a lot of fantasies, desires, and motivations that this community has that we have a unique opportunity to deliver on,” Brown says in another Amazon interview. “Lots of great driving games have amazing gameplay, amazing content… But to really cross that bridge, to become a game that people genuinely love, then there needs to be that human connection where you’re actually rooting for these characters, falling in love with these characters,” Brown adds. “That, I think, is a place where our game will be able to really differentiate itself from the other titles in the genre. There’s nothing about this genre that prevents it from having amazing characters and amazing stories — it’s just not really been explored yet.”
Maverick Games’ team already numbers 62 people and is apparently still growing, with its developers having previous experience at PlayGround Games or on games such as Sea of Thieves and Cyberpunk 2077. The game’s lead writer, meanwhile, is Jamie Brittain, who was the co-creator behind the hugely popular Skins TV show.
Nothing more is being shared about this game yet beyond the fact that it does exist, so it could be a while before we hear more. In the meantime, we have a whole list of the best racing games on Xbox to check out while we wait!
